Getting started with Bookmark Manager for Chrome

Remember Google Stars? This is Google's new bookmark manager that brings Material design to your desktop browser.

Back in May, Google was testing a new bookmark feature it called Stars. Unfortunately, the feature didn't go public, except for one -- probably unintentional -- day on the Chrome Web Store.

Now Google is offering a similar feature to Stars, called Bookmark Manager. Before you start using it, you'll need to a check a couple of Chrome settings. Here's how:

Setup

Step 1: Make sure you are on Chrome version 38 or later by going to Menu > About. If not, perform the required update.

Step 2: Check that Chrome sync is enabled to access the new features. Click this link for more information on how to set up Chrome sync.

Step 3: Install the new Bookmark Manager extension from the Chrome Web Store. This will replace your current bookmark manager.

Once installed, the new Bookmark Manager can be accessed the same way as the older one by going to the Chrome menu > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager orCtrl/Cmd+Shift+O.

Features

Now that you're setup, here's the highlights from the new features:

Saving a link

This process is still the same, but with one new cool feature. After you adjust the title, description, URL, and folder, you also pick a picture from the site to represent your bookmark. Additionally, if Google thinks a particular folder is a good place for the link, it will be suggested to you.

Searching your stash

The new search ability can look at the content of the actual page, not just the title, description, and URL that you have saved. That will definitely make finding bookmarks easier!

Organization

Bookmarks can be organized by topic automatically, but you can also organize them yourself (as seen in the top image above) just like like the old bookmark manager allowed.

Sharing

When creating a new folder in your bookmarks, you can choose to make it Private or Public. This way you can share a collection of bookmarks with friends, family, or even students.

Bonus

Existing bookmarks will get a facelift with images and the information card style entry.

Should you decide that this new bookmark interface isn't for you, reverting is easy. Just go to Menu > More tools > Extensions and click the trash icon next to Bookmark Manager to remove it from Chrome.

What do you think of the look and features in the new Bookmark Manager? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Microsoft Security Essentials & ForeFront Client Security Definition Updates October 30, 2014

Microsoft Security Essentials has been declining on AV-Tests for years and Microsoft is beginning to show neglect in keeping up with the competition.

In 2009, Microsoft made a risky jump into the antivirus industry when they released Microsoft Security Essentials. The program received good praise initially and early tests proved that Microsoft’s new antivirus client was just as effective as it’s paid competitors. But Microsoft Security Essentials has received more than a few poor scores and ratings over the past few years. Microsoft went from offering customers an impressive antivirus program, to offering a ‘baseline’ antivirus in a short period of time.

Here’s the thing with antivirus programs that most computer users don’t quite understand, most of them are pretty much the same. Though there is a difference between the good and bad programs, which can only be defined by a programs ability to quarantine and eliminate any imposing threats. Security is a constantly changing field and an antivirus program can easily fall behind if it’s not kept up to date. Independent testing organizations, such as AV-Test and AV-comparatives should regularly be consulted by computer users. This will ensure that you are regularly aware of the upcoming programs and top shelf antivirus’ available each year.

Microsoft Security Essentials is still considered a simple antivirus and as I previously said, simple just isn’t sufficient in a field that is always changing. Every year there are more methods and ways of attack discovered. Phishing is the most common, an attack on your PC to steal passwords or credit card information by posing as a business or authority. Most programs worth paying for offer anti-phishing features, Microsoft Security Essentials does not. Features other programs also provide are a secure file shredder, cloud powered spam protection and a tool for removing threats like rootkits. The last thing I will add to convince you to change Microsoft Security Essentials is a bit of common sense once you figure it out. Microsoft has become the most popular target of malware and viruses. Just look at how many devices run on Microsoft’s operating system. Once they released Microsoft Security Essentials, the antivirus program automatically became the main target of trojans and viruses.

Crack RAR passwords with Rar Pass Finder

We all know that any archive can be protected using a password and RAR isn’t an exception. However, there are some scenarios when we securely archive some top secret documents or very personal files, but after many months/years, we forget the password and the files aren’t accesible anymore. Of course you can try different password combinations, from your family, birth dates, girl names and all that but most of the time, you won’t succeed.
Rar Pass Finder is a small and easy to use software, that helps you to crack your own .rar passwords..actually any RAR passwords but don’t get ideas now, it’s not nice. Rar Pass Finder isn’t different from other password finders, it uses dictionary files, to test against the unknown password. The software isn’t 100% accurate, meaning that you won’t always find your passwords. Rar Pass Finder comes only in German, but since it has only 3 buttons, it’s pretty self explanatory. Drag and drop your .rar file(s) in the program window or open them using the “Rar-Archiv” button and start the checking using the “Passwortliste” (see screenshot).
Just a reminder for those dreaming, there isn’t any software that finds archive passwords, even if they use brute force or dictionary attacks. In the end, it’s all about luck but the software really helps

Avast! Free Antivirus 10.0.2206

Avast! Free Antivirus is an efficient and comprehensive antivirus program. It is one of the most popular antivirus programs available, thanks to the reliable and trustworthy brand that Avast have created. The key features that continue to make Avast! Free Antivirus so popular are the easy UI, optimized scanning options and continuously updated database of virus definitions.

Simple, improved UI
The 2014 version includes a much simpler and quicker to use UI. Key features can be easily reached in the sidebar and the homepage is now customizable so you can access the tools you use most often directly. The overall appearance is clean and uncluttered, with buttons intuitively labelled and positioned.

Comprehensive Protection
Avast are constantly updating their database of virus definitions, meaning your computer will be protected against the latest spyware, viruses and potentially hazardous websites. Avast’s large and active community quickly alerts the development team of new security threats which are swiftly countered and added to Avast’s significant database. The browser add-on further improves computer security with features like cookie and social tracking blocking.

Speed
Avast! Free Antivirus comes with 5 standard scanning options based on depth and speed. Rapid scan will suffice in most cases - targeting removable media and the files you select, identifying security threats in usually less than a minute. A startup scan will launch automatically on boot up and is a useful, regular security check. The optimized scan engine in the 2014 version means scanning of text content is 10 times faster than previous versions. Scanning of EXE files is around 2 times faster. Improved memory usage means Avast! Free Antivirus should cause less strain on your system so you can continue with other tasks faster.

Summary
Avast! Free Antivirus is definitely one of the best free total security managers available. It is relatively lightweight and efficient, while still providing comprehensive security protection. The browser add on can slow browsing speed and the scanning might not be as detailed as some premium antivirus options. But the simple, effective UI and strong security capabilities make Avast! Free Antivirus a very good choice for those looking for free computer security.
